IMPORTANT LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS INFORMATION
READING LOG – Students must read at night a
minimum of 15 minutes and have an adult sign their log confirming that they saw
them read. For the purposes of the READING LOG students may read books,
magazines, newspapers, articles, mail, TV Guide, or any other text that they can get
their hands on. If students read over the weekend and bring their READING LOG
back signed on Monday, they can receive bonus points toward their Language Arts
grade.
BOOK REVIEW – BOOK REVIEWS are due every two
weeks, if not every three weeks depending on the Madison Co. Schools schedule.
For the purposes of the BOOK REVIEW students must read a book on their reading
level and interest level and complete a BOOK REVIEW form over the book. I have
recently updated this form to be more specific and also to give the students a
graphic organizer to help them take notes as they read. This assignment is
designed for chapter books or longer picture books, because it requires
students to write a minimum of 3 paragraphs about their book, which include
information about the plot, characters, setting and moral of the story. After
completing the BOOK REVIEW students must also take the accompanying AR Quiz
over that book (if an AR Quiz exists). The BOOK REVIEWS allow me to assess all
the students’ reading skills at their own ability and interest level. Plus, it
also allows me to assess their informational and persuasive writing skills,
too!
AR QUIZZES – Students must take AR QUIZZES
over all the books they read or have read to them! Ms. Decker and Ms.
Scully both read to the students at school and students should at least be able
to take AR QUIZZES over those books. AR QUIZZES allow me to monitor what types
of books students are reading and how well they comprehend the books they are
reading.
ALL
OF THESE ASSIGNMENTS GIVE STUDENTS THE FREEDOM TO READ WHAT THEY WANT & BE
GIVEN CREDIT FOR DOING SO.
New and Improved BOOK REVIEW!!!!
Remember you may do a BOOK REVIEW over any BOOK you want. Just make sure that before you start reading that you will be able to answer the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY questions for your summary and recommendation!
